Student-led project Sweet Talk works to raise awareness for mental health

2 mins read

Sweet Talk is a student-led project to raise awareness for mental health and the amenities that the university offers to support students who are struggling.

Fourth year students Alicia Bohill, Lucy Hogben, Kasey Stewart, Anna Archibald, and Sian Campbell made this event possible. They were given the challenge to create a stall highlighting a service that the university offers as part of the Raising Awareness event.

They decided to take this opportunity to highlight the services for mental health at the university- with a fun twist.

Not only will this stall provide information on mental health services, there will also be cakes and biscuits to decorate. This is a great opportunity to bring people together and provide a comfortable space to talk about mental health. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a sweet treat?

The Raising Awareness event will be held on April 16 from 10am – 3pm in the atrium. Sweet Talk will have a table for decorating treats and one with mental health information. The stall will include leaflets, informal chats and an opportunity to ask questions.

The treats will have gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. All allergens will be organised and labelled so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the stall!

Sweet Talk guests and information

Dr Juliette Summers and Dr Alie Hilda de Vries are both mental health first aiders from the management school. They will be there to answer questions and talk. Fiona Glashan, the university mental health and well-being officer, will be coming along to chat with students as well.

There will also be some information on the new Helping Our Mental Environment scheme that’s being introduced to the university to offer more mental health support for students.

One of the Sweet Talk group members, Alicia, said: “We really want to bring people together.”

The group would like to  encourage everyone to come along and to leave feedback on the event and the mental health services the university offers.
