The nominations for the 76th Annual Emmy Awards were officially announced this Wednesday. The winners will be presented on September 15 2024, after the final round of voting is finished in late August.
The Emmy’s, although routinely an annual event also aired earlier this year in January. The upcoming ceremony in September sees the Emmy’s slotting back into their regular Awards Calendar after the 2023 ceremony’s postponement due to the TV and Film industry’ labour strikes, which delayed production all over Hollywood.
The FX show The Bear has set a new bar for comedy shows after receiving 23 nominations while the historical drama Shōgun leads the way with 25 nominations. The popular Netflix limited series Baby Reindeer also fared well across the board.
However the nominations this year aren’t without their snubs and surprises. Selena Gomez has received her first acting nomination for her role in Only Murders in the Building after being left out when both her co-stars were nominated previously. Martin Short, Steve Martin, Meryl Streep, Matthew Broderick and Da’Vine Joy Randolph have all landed nominations this year for the series too.
The new HBO limited series, The Regime, is noticeably missing from the list. You would think anything starring Kate Winslet would be a hit with audiences and critics however it failed as a satirical despite Winslet’s praised performance in which she gave her all.
A big surprise is Idris Elba’s nomination for the Apple TV series Hijack which wasn’t expected to turn up in the awards, but the Emmy’s has made sure to give the show its well-deserved spot amongst the more mainstream shows.
