A24 and Glen Powell to Ressurect Iconic Slasher Horror Franchise

The rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre have been bought by indie studio A24 after a lengthy bidding war.

Infamous for introducing the world to the cannibalistic Sawyer family and their chainsaw toting butcher Leatherface, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a franchise with a long and tumultuous history.

Starting in 1974, the franchise has come back from seeming death several times, most recently, Netflix took a stab at it in 2022, but hopes for a sequel were dashed as it became a punching bag for both critics and audiences.

Heading this new entry will be Glen Powell in the executive producer position, and JT Mollner, writer of The Long Walk, stepping in as director.

Mollner will be helming the franchise’s first foray into long-form television, stating that he wasn’t interested in remaking the first film; instead, he wanted to bring a fresh perspective to “the existing folklore.”

Alongside this slasher classic, A24 is set to release another remake this year in a Friday the 13th prequel show titled Camp Crystal Lake.

Details on Camp Crystal Lake are scarce at the moment, but what is clear is that A24 is slowly becoming the new home for classic slasher villains.
