Who would have thought that a simple refreshing cucumber would turn into a viral sensation? Well, TikTok’s latest food trend consisting of a cucumber salad has caught the attention of millions of viewers (including mine) thanks to one Canadian creator on the popular platform. We want to know why everyone is going crazy over this refreshing dish, what does this salad consist of and is it just another passing fad? It is time to uncover the secrets behind this popular trend!
What is the trend?
The viral cucumber salad trend involves using an entire cucumber- Yes that is right, one whole cucumber- sliced very thinly. Next you add in a selection of various ingredients that would pair nicely with the crunchy garden favourite, such as cream cheese, smoked salmon and red onion. Finally, give it a mix and enjoy the beautiful flavours accompanied by the refreshing crisp texture of cucumber!
How did it start?
So how did this trend start? Well, Logan Moffitt, the creator of the “cucumber community” gained popularity on TikTok for his delicious recipes. With a staggering 6.6 million followers, his eager audience waits in anticipation for each video featuring creative ways to enjoy a whole cucumber! As Logan says, “Sometimes you need to eat an entire cucumber”.
Why is it so popular?
The recipe itself is not the only reason why it became admired by many. People are mesmerised by the tools and method that Logan uses to make it. Rather than using a knife, he recommends using a mandoline as an efficient way to cut the cucumber into very thin slices. Additionally, Logan’s recipes are distinctive for using a deli container for mixing all the ingredients together. The Tupperware is perfect for taking your cucumber salad on the go as the lid helps to prevent it from spilling. Lastly, MSG is a key ingredient to his dishes as his most famous line, “some MSG obviously”, is mentioned in every video he creates.
Will the cucumber trend last?
Like many food trends that have come and gone on TikTok- such as the Dubai Chocolate trend, Chamoy pickles, and butter boards- I believe the cucumber salad trend has reached its peak as an online sensation. Before long, it will likely settle into our everyday lunchtime routines, much like dalgona coffee, which I still make almost weekly, hoping each time to recapture the magic of my 2020 version (another viral hit!). That said, I have yet to try my hand at making my own cucumber salad, so I’ll reserve judgment on whether it truly lives up to the internet’s hype.
So, if you happen to pop down to the Nisa on campus and wonder where the cucumbers have gone, I may have borrowed a few to try out my own cucumber salad recipe inspired by Logan!
