Deinfluencing is a critical part of staying on budget as a student, it’s not just a social media trend, it’s a skill that you can use in everyday life.

The Halloween decoration fad of the year is cute pastel Halloween (bonus points if there is a bow) that has spilled from our screens onto the shelves of every shop that has a Halloween aisle.

These decorations are tempting when shopping for Halloween, I mean it’s just so cute you can’t walk away right? It’s important to consider some budget saving questions.

1. Will it be cringe next year?

While trends are fun and exciting they are just trends. Will it make sense for a ghost to have a bow or a cowboy hat on it’s head when the trend is in the grave?

When decorating for holidays it is better to gather decorations over the years that can bring all the fun memories from the previous holiday to the next.

2. Is it sustainable?

Sustainability is also an important factor to consider, some trendy Halloween products are produced quickly and can often lack quality. If your decoration sadly breaks would you want to fix it or just bin it and hop on the trend of next Halloween?

This question of sustainability can also extend to Halloween costumes. Are there pieces of this costume that you can use next year for a different costume? If there is that is a good sign that it is a worthy purchase.

3. Do you actually want it or does it just look cute on the shelf?

The biggest tip for deinfluencing yourself is to walk away and continue shopping. If you still want remember it at the end of your trip then it is a good sign this is a product you will actually love.

Deinfluencing isn’t just a holiday exclusive it is something that can be done every time you buy something.

It is important to remember to do what makes you happy, if the current trend is your own personal style and has been for years then go for it! Remember you deserve a reward every so often to make you feel better as it gets colder this autumn.
