The University of Stirling Men’s 1s secured the BUCS Premier North league title in style with a convincing 5-1 victory over Nottingham University, producing a composed first half before an open and entertaining second.

The opening stages belonged to the visitors, with Nottingham starting brightly and creating the better early moments.

Stirling were forced to defend deep at times, with Archie Gibson producing an excellent challenge inside the box to halt a dangerous attack.

Alex Jeanes was shown an early yellow card for a mistimed tackle, while Alex Sutherland was called into action a few times, holding a crowded free kick and later reacting well after spilling a cross that Nottingham fired over.

As the half progressed, Stirling began to settle into the game. They started to keep the ball better, and their first real chance arrived midway through the half when a deflected effort went over for a corner.

The breakthrough came on 30 minutes when Finn Moffett finished calmly across the goalkeeper to give Stirling the lead.

The goal shifted the momentum, and Stirling quickly grew in confidence.

Thomas Vonk was booked shortly after, but moments later made amends, heading home from a deep throw after the initial clearance to double the advantage.

Sam Martin went close late in the half, firing just wide, as Stirling went into the break 2-0 ahead.

The second half was played at a much higher tempo, with both sides looking to attack.

Stirling were on the front foot early, while Nottingham responded with a series of corners and half-chances, including a powerful header that flashed wide.

The game remained open, with Sutherland making important saves at one end and the Nottingham goalkeeper denying Moffett at the other.

The decisive moment arrived when Jay Burns drove forward and forced a save, allowing Moffett to react quickest and finish for his second of the afternoon.

The same combination struck again five minutes later, Burns again breaking through before Moffett completed his hat trick to put the result beyond doubt.

Nottingham pulled a goal back on 90 minutes, but Stirling had the final say when Burns converted a stoppage-time penalty to complete the scoring.

It was an excellent performance from Stirling; the victory capped a strong campaign and confirmed the league title in emphatic fashion.

Head coach Chris Geddes praised his side’s performance after the final whistle, highlighting both their work rate and quality on the day.

“We were good from the start; the boys were well at it,” he said. “We worked really hard, we battled hard, we were winning tackles, and they were a big, strong, physical team with boys who can get around the pitch.

“But we were just better; we were clinical.

“It was excellent, and we are delighted with the win. Fair play to the boys today; they won us our fifth BUCS title in six seasons. It is impressive, and I am absolutely delighted for the boys.”
