Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision to close Bluepoint Games has landed a bitter blow for fans who were eager to see what the studio would do next.
After years of delivering some of PlayStation’s most respected remakes, the studio’s future appeared full of promise.
Founded in 2006 and acquired by Sony in 2021, Bluepoint earned widespread acclaim for modernising classic titles with exceptional technical and graphical polish.
Its work on Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5 and Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 4 set a benchmark for how legacy games could be rebuilt without losing their identity. For many players, those remakes were not only impressive but also definitive.
That track record had fuelled excitement around the studio’s next project.
Following years of remakes, Bluepoint had reportedly moved on to developing an original title, a shift that many fans saw as a natural and exciting evolution.
The idea of a studio with Bluepoint’s craftsmanship, applying that expertise to a new concept, had generated genuine anticipation.
Instead, Sony has confirmed that the studio will be shut down following an internal review of its global development operations.
The company has said the decision was not tied to the quality of Bluepoint’s past releases but rather to a broader reassessment of development priorities within Sony Interactive Entertainment. The unannounced project has since been cancelled.
Approximately 70 employees are expected to be affected by the closure. Sony has stated it is assessing ways to support impacted staff, though no specific measures have been detailed.
Reaction across the industry has been swift, with developers and players alike expressing frustration and disappointment.
For many, the loss of Bluepoint is not just about another studio closure but about the end of a team that consistently proved how much care and respect remakes could have when handled by the right hands.
Sony has reiterated its commitment to producing high-quality first-party titles and continuing investment across its remaining studios.
Still, for those like myself who were excited to see Bluepoint continue to push the current gen of games, the closure feels like a missed opportunity that will linger.
A PlayStation spokesperson commented, “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team, and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftsmanship.”
