Stirling Men’s 2s Prove They’re in Too Strong a Form

5 mins read

Stirling Men’s Hockey 2s enjoyed a triumphant run of fixtures across February, combining dominant performances, a demanding internal derby, and a strong away showing to close the month in confident form.

Stirling faced St Andrews for the second time this season, recording a commanding 6–1 victory over their 3s in the Scottish Conference Trophy.

From the first quarter, Stirling controlled the match, applying immediate pressure and taking advantage of turnovers. Two quick early goals set the tone and gave Stirling a deserved lead.

Stirling moved the ball with purpose, playing a direct game that repeatedly exposed St Andrews on the counter.

The visitors struggled to cope with the tempo and spent much of the opening quarter defending deep.

In the second quarter, St Andrews earned a short corner, but Stirling defended calmly and maintained composure.

Stirling responded with a strong attacking phase through midfield, though it fell just short of a goal.

In the third quarter, Stirling extended their lead from a short corner when a long strike, which was going in, deflected off a St Andrews player and secured the goal.

Additional pressure followed, with multiple short corners in quick succession, though nothing added to the scoreline.

Stirling continued to dictate possession with slow, technical build-up play, while St Andrews offered limited threat.

The final quarter brought more action, with St Andrews pulling one back from a short corner after loose defending, but Stirling quickly responded with a well-worked goal from a cross in front of the goalkeeper.

Soon after, a St Andrews error in the circle let Stirling score again, and a confident individual effort flicked high into the net capped the scoring.

The Stirling squad shared the goals, with Callum Sumsion, Oscar Hughes, Tom Owen, Finlay Jack, Alex Rea, and Jonathan Van Troost all finding the net.

The contrast in intensity was clear, summed up by a St Andrews player’s remark to his sideline: “I don’t care how much we lose by.” Stirling were superior in both quality and commitment throughout.

Captain for the game Oscar Hughes reflected on the performance, noting the team’s approach: “The St Andrews side had a strong press, but early on we found that when the play broke through, they couldn’t organise themselves. We decided to play fast on the breaks, and they struggled to deal with it. We played some of the best hockey of our season in the first and last quarters. As my first game as captain, I felt the pressure to lead us to a victory, and the team responded brilliantly, forcing St Andrews into mistakes that our middle and forwards were able to capitalise on.”

Attention then turned to Derby Day, as the 2s faced off against the 3s in a BUCS League contest.

The 2s emerged 12–2 winners in a high-scoring match, but the scoreline did not fully reflect the effort shown by the 3s.

Despite the margin, the 3s competed throughout, demonstrating strong team play, energy, and commitment across all four quarters.

The fixture provided a demanding test for both sides, highlighting the attacking depth of the 2s while also underlining the cohesion and work rate within the 3s, who continued to support one another even as the match progressed.

Stirling 2s rounded off the month with an away trip to face Abertay 1s in the Scottish Conference Trophy, producing another confident attacking display.

The squad shared their goals, with Zach Hayward-Rogers scoring twice, Mark Harley netting a hat trick, and Tom Owen and Joe McCrae adding further goals.

Across the three fixtures, Stirling 2s combined control, consistency, and aggressive attacking, navigating different squads while maintaining high effort.

The run of results marked a positive close to February and reinforced the squad’s depth and cohesion in both the BUCS League and the Scottish Conference Trophy.

With two games remaining in the BUCS League and promotion within reach, the squad will be looking to continue this strong run in the matches ahead.
