University of Stirling golfer, Will Coxon, hung on to win the R&A Student Tour Series in Portugal despite terrible weather conditions.
Coxon took home the win after playing two rounds in extreme rain, wind, and thunder. The event took place at Palmares Golf Club in the Algarve.
When the final round had to be cancelled due to the weather, Will was six over par, one shot ahead of second placed Conor Stapleton from Maynooth University. He was four shots ahead of tied third place Judd Sundelson from the University of St Andrews, and Tommy Evans from the University of Exeter.
The R&A Student Tour Series has five events, taking place at courses across Europe. The first two events took place in September at Halmstad Golf Course in Sweden, and in October at Malone Golf Course in Ireland. The fourth event takes place this week at La Sella Golf Club, near Alicante. The final will take place in St Andrews at the end of March.
Dean Robertson, the University of Stirling’s Head of Golf, said that due to the weather “it was very much about survival – improvising and adapting to the challenging conditions… Will showed a great deal of character, grit, and determination to win the event – he did well and I’m delighted for him.”
R&A Student Tour Series Order of Merit
Will, among other University of Stirling golfers, is in contention for the R&A Student Tour Series Men’s Order of Merit, recognising the best player over the tournament.
Stirling’s Ross Laird is currently third in the rankings for the Men’s Order of Merit, with other Stirling golfers such as Nicholas Wall (5th), Alexander Farmer (6th), George Cannon (9th), and James Wood and Will Coxon (tied 11th).
Abbie Nisbet is currently Stirling’s highest ranking for the Women’s Order of Merit at 8th, with Grace Bowen at 11th.
