Edinburgh Fringe: Deception: A Magic Experience ★★★★☆

3 mins read

Award-winning magician Dan Bastianelli brings an intimate magic experience rich in storytelling to the Edinburgh Fringe this year, wowing audiences in a pleasantly understated performance.

The Space is well-known for hosting magic shows, and they’ve managed to book the most lovely magic in Deception: A Magic Experience. Dan Bastinanelli has come armed with clean, impressive magic, fantastic storytelling, and a show that will leave all ages feeling really rather satisfied.

Dan was a charming presence on the stage, mixing his life story and background in magic with tricks you’d expect from a much larger show – he may have only been filling a small room, but there was a sense that greater audiences would be greeting him in the future. The magic was really wonderful; however, I did experience a sense of relief when the tricks went well – perhaps an anxious symptom of experiencing a new magician. The anxiety did not need to raise it’s head, however, as Bastianelli did not slip up more than a hidden flash of red card in his hand.

The magic had no airs and flairs, keeping blood pressures thankfully low for the older audience members, and was greatly enjoyable for the children in the room. It felt safe and comfortable, and if you’re looking for a Fringe show to provide classic magic that remains jaw-droppingly impressive given the skill it takes, without the fanfare and balloons of a circus act, then you’re in for a very enjoyable afternoon with Deception. However, if you’re after something a bit more vibrant or seeking that classic Fringe comedy tone, then perhaps it’s best to leave Deception to the daytime audiences and seek your thrills elsewhere. But know that the magic here is, simply, sublime.
