The University of Stirling’s Central building will boast a large white ribbon for four days, standing as a representation of the university’s pledge to end violence against women.
The ribbon, which will be projected onto the side of the building, announces Stirling University’s involvement in the nationally recognised White Ribbon Campaign.
The White Ribbon campaign encourages men to do more to combat violence against women. This includes reflecting on their involvement in the culture that it thrives in.
Their website states: “Most men do not commit violence against women. But all men have a role in ending it. If we all start by making a pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about men’s violence against women in all its forms, that will make a huge difference.”

Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the university, Sir Gerry McCormac, is leading Stirling’s involvement as a White Ribbon Ambassador.
Professor McCormac said: “I am proud that the University of Stirling has joined with our local partners to support the White Ribbon campaign.
“Our sustained commitment to ending gender-based violence is already embedded in the culture here at Stirling, but we can never shout too loud about this issue. That’s why we are encouraging men among our staff and students to come forward and be part of the campaign, to challenge gender-based violence if they see it happen, and to support and empower people who have endured it.
“The white ribbon reminds everyone – staff, students and visitors – of our dedication and shared responsibility to eradicate gender-based violence.”

Last year, Stirling University Union aligned with the “#Erasethegrey” campaign, to raise awareness of sexual assault. The endorsement of the White Ribbon is yet another step towards showing the university’s dedication to student safety.
The ribbon will be visible from December 1 to December 4.
