Album Review: Sabrina Carpenter’s fruitcake is certainly a “Chrismash”

Sabrina Carpenter’s newly released Christmas ep is the perfect holiday track for 2023. With poppy beats and just enough sass, Carpenter knows how to write a pop hit. With the recent rise of more pop infused Christmas songs fruitcake is the 2023 version of All I Want For Christmas Is You.

The tracklist is comprised of six songs and opens with A Nonsense Christmas, a remix of her viral song Nonsense off Carpenters studio album emails i cant send. The lyrics have been altered to fit a more seasonal feeling including “I don’t want Santa’s elves underneath this ol’ tree/ Here’s a lil’ carol I wrote, it’s about you and me (Me)” which adds a fun, flirty holiday twist on Carpenters smash hit. Nonsense was her propel to the top. It makes sense Carpenter would continue to use this song.

Following this, buy me presents keeps the same pop sound that Carpenter is known for, taking a hallmark twist on a Christmas song with lyrics such as “From a city that’s colder (brrr) But damn it, he’s so hot”. It reminds many of the cheesy hallmark movies you watch bundled up with hot chocolate around a fireplace. Carpenter talks about battling for her lover’s attention around the holiday season.

But Carpenter has much more talent within her toolbox, writing deeply emotional songs with cindy-lou who discusses her lover’s other girl, with Carpenter reminiscing on the one time she met the girl, and how she holds thoughts of them together when he should be with her instead.

Overall, fruitcake is a perfect holiday ep, giving us the perfect blend of upbeat fun songs to dance around the Christmas tree to, along with the reflective deeply personal lyrics that Carpenter excels in. If this ep isn’t on your Christmas playlist, it definitely should be.
