Stirling alumni shortlisted for general election

Former Stirling student, Euan Stainbank, has been shortlisted as a Labour candidate for Falkirk in this year’s general election.

Stainbank is currently a Labour Councillor for Falkirk South after being elected in 2022 as their youngest-ever councillor.

Stainbank graduated from Stirling University in 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in Law. During his time at the university, he was president of both the Debating and Law societies, which won him the Best Society President award.

Stainbank’s young age has been a point of contention for some, but he has previously said he sees it as a positive, allowing him to bring a new energy to politics.

Speaking to Brig about being a young candidate, Stainbank said: “The accusation I lack real-life experience strikes me as odd as I’ve proven to myself at least that in my comparatively shorter life and career that I have always put in a shift.

“Young people’s experiences are an important perspective that must be heard and I believe will be acted on by a progressive Labour government as an essential element of a new deal for working people.”

Speaking on his time at Stirling, Stainbank spoke of how his time at the university allowed him to become a leader, saying: “As President of Debating, the Law society, as well as a candidate for Union President, I learned the value of giving back to the community that had given me so much.

“How to understand the value of service isn’t solely by looking to the party politics of the day – it is in how you work to improve the state of things from listening to those who share the same space as you.”

Now that he has been shortlisted, Stainbank must participate in a hustings where Falkirk Labour Party members will vote on their preferred candidates.

The winner of this hustings will be selected as the Labour candidate for Falkirk at the general election later this year.
