The Beauty of Valentine’s Day

4 mins read

In times like these, where disaster appears to be unraveling all over the world, we need to focus on the moments that give us joy.

Appreciate how lucky we are, appreciate the people around us and appreciate the ability to celebrate and experience joy.

This is why days like Valentine’s Day are so important.

Society seems to have a love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day. Over social media there’s so much negativity, pressure and stories about all the things wrong about the day, but perhaps we’ve forgotten about the good parts of the holiday.

The day of love, the day to recognise those around you, the day where everywhere you look you see couples, friends and family’s full of adoration and happiness .

Valentine’s Day has never just been about romantic love for me.

When I was younger it would be about going to class and exchaging cards and lollipops with my classmates. Making cards and crafts to bring home to our parents and then at the end of the day getting to have a meal with my family. It was always just a happy day to appreciate the closest people in my life.

I still love it now that I’m older.

Not only because I get to spend the day with someone I love, but also for what I get to observe.

Going out and seeing couples, old and young, out for meals and exchaging gifts. Hearing the stories from my friends of what they did, watching romcoms and scrolling through instagram to see what different things people are doing to celebrate.

It’s a fun day, it’s a happy day – I mean love is literally in the air!

Valentine’s Day can suck for a lot of people, and you’re lying if you say there’s never been a day in your life where you’ve resented it, but I think a shift in perspective is much needed. Everyone views it as only important if you’re in a relationship but that’s not true.

The point of Valentine’s Day is of course to celebrate with your partner, but also to celebrate the love you share with your friends and family. Appreciate who you have in your life and wish them a Happy Valentines Day! Buy them a box of chocolate or some flowers and let them know you love them!

Sometimes it’s easier to think about the bad side of things than the good side. It’s easier to hate things then to find the parts you love. It’s easy to build resentment for things when you’ve never had the chance to see the good in them.

However, if you change the way you look at something, you can also change the way you feel about it.

There’s a day each year that is purely about celebrating love and I think that’s beautiful.
