Larry Dean: Dodger Review – Comedy’s Haunted Victorian Doll Serves Up a Uniquely Hilarious Show ★★★★★

3 mins read

Scottish comedian Larry Dean’s new show is an incredibly manic yet surprisingly heartfelt evening that will have you in stitches from the start with one of the most unique comedic styles on the circuit.

Dean has been gaining a lot of notoriety in recent years, largely thanks to clips of him on social media. He has become particularly popular amongst queer British Millennials and Gen Z.

Dean moves like a haunted Victorian doll with a lot of manic energy, an assessment he agreed with when speaking to Brig after the show.

This style of movement combined with a lot of tangents and occasionally screeching like a velociraptor in a blender creates a very surreal and chaotic feeling for the show that really cannot be found in any other comic.

Not many other comics are as physical as Dean is in this show which further adds to the uniquely insane atmosphere of the show as he prances around like a puppet being controlled by a drunken puppeteer.

Comedy Chaos

In the show, Dean talks a lot about autism, having recently been diagnosed with Level One Autism Spectrum Disorder and his recently deceased nanny’s battle with dementia, which forms the emotional heart of the show while still being incredibly entertaining.

Dean’s crowd work is also incredibly entertaining, with the highlights being when he repeatedly screeched at an audience member while calling himself dark Larry and when he sat in an audience member’s empty seat while she went to the bathroom, only to then have that audience member sit on his lap which caught even the hyper-chaotic comic off guard.

I’ll spare you any more details as I wouldn’t to spoil the details of the set, but overall, Larry Dean has once again proven that he is one of the most uniquely entertaining up-and-coming comedians the UK has to offer.

If you get the chance to snag a ticket to any more of Dean’s shows I would highly recommend it as you will struggle to find better bang for your buck with any other comic currently working.

A press ticket was provided to Brig by the McRoberts Art Centre for this show free of charge.
