Seven years after the final episode of Daredevil, Matt Murdock has made a long-awaited comeback.
Back in 2018, Daredevil was cancelled after three seasons produced by Netflix. The cancellation sparked outrage from fans who were desperate to see more from Matt Murdock.
Throughout the past seven years, the beloved character has made a few guest appearances in various marvel productions such as Spiderman: No Way Home, She-Hulk and Echo.
The new show, though now officially part of the MCU and Disney as opposed to Netflix, is directly connected to the orignal series.
Here is my spoiler-free review of the first two episodes.
The good
Though fans feared that Disney would wash the series down and be unable to live up to the Daredevil legacy, they did a pretty good job of the first two episodes.
Starting off strong with an intense, heart wrenching first 15 minutes, fans were brought right back into the Daredevil universe. With enough familiar faces to ease us back into the show, there was also a few new characters introduced that have great chemistry with the rest of the cast.
Charlie Cox slid right back into character, quick-witted, funny, with an edge to the character. it was great to see familar story arcs, with a return of Wilson Fisk, aka King Pin, verses Daredevil.
The first episode was good, but the second episode was definitly better. Lighting, fight scenes and the characters definitely worked better the second episode, the show seemed to really get into its groove.
The use of music was great too, with each episode ending with a fun song sequence. Definitely bringing some of the old marvel vibes, but also having a bit of The Boys vibes with the fight sequences and music.
The bad
Of course, Born Again isn’t perfect, but Daredevil is a lot to live up to. The use of CGI, specifically in the first episode was disappointing. Similar to most recent Marvel projects they rely a lot more on CGI than real stunts. Though in saying that, there still were some really good fight scenes especially in the second episode.
The rating is now mature as opposed to 18+ which is a bit concerning in regards to the show being too ‘Disney’. However, so far its still been good, so its really a wait and see situation with how the rest of the season plays out.
The first season will consist of nine episodes and is part of Phase Five of the MCU. You can stream the new episodes on Disney+ now, with a new episode released every Tuesday.
