Racing Down Under: The 2025 Australian Grand Prix Recap

The Australian Grand Prix took place at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit on March 16 to kick off the 2025 Formula 1 season. With a victory to McLaren’s Lando Norris gaining his fifth career win and surged to the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings.

​The race was marked by unpredictable weather, with drivers facing difficult conditions as the track was very slippery and crosswinds and tailwinds for most of the race. When Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar crashed into the wall during the formation lap, it established a dramatic start to an already unpredictable race and caused a fifteen-minute delay in the start.

The start of the race was Decided to be a normal grand prix start and not a rolling start meaning that the safety car would have started off the race due to the unfavourable conditions in Melbourne. The race though due to the aborted start ended up being only fifty-seven laps.

For most of the race, Norris held his lead after starting from pole position. However, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen briefly took the lead after he lost control in the rainy conditions. The lead was quickly regained by Norris, who finished 0.895 seconds ahead of Verstappen.

​George Russell with Mercedes finished third, securing podium. In an outstanding effort, his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a rookie, went from 16th on the grid to fourth place, becoming the second-youngest driver in Formula 1 to score points.

Several drivers, including Jack Doohan, Carlos Sainz Jr, Fernando Alonso, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Liam Lawson, retired from the race as a result of accidents. The unpredictable nature of the race was increased by the numerous safety car deployments that resulted from these mishaps.

The season was bittersweet for front runners McLaren as Lando Norris won the race however local favourite Oscar Piastri Almost crashed out on lap 45, reversing back onto the track, falling from second to Finishing the race in ninth after clawing his way back through the pack to be in points.

The season got off to a difficult start for Ferrari. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, making his Ferrari debut, battled with the car’s performance in wet conditions and finished tenth, while Charles Leclerc finished eighth.

Alex Albon of Williams finished in fifth place, which was the team’s best performance since the Belgian Grand Prix in 2021. Lance Stroll of Aston Martin and Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber both had amazing finishes, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.

With McLaren and Norris indicating their strong ambitions for the championship battle, the 2025 Australian Grand Prix set the stage for an intriguing season with eyes now looking to the next race in Shang Hai and the further season.
