Fearing the Future: Navigating Climate Anxiety in an everchanging world

3 mins read

Climate change in the past couple of years has been on everyone’s minds, from big leaders of the world to the younger generations. Through all this talk and advocation its hard sometimes for people to see the glass half full instead of half empty. When down about climate anxiety what do you do?

These feelings of despair, sadness and dread are associated with a new term coined climate anxiety or eco anxiety.

Climate anxiety effects countless people these days with feelings of hopelessness when faced with the knowledge of biodiversity loss, icebergs melting, environmental degradation and what will happen in years to come. For many, especially the younger generations, it can feel like a heavy burden and impossible to overcome. It’s tough because you want to make a difference and change the world for the better, but sometimes it feels like you’re on a sinking ship with no lifeboat.

However, the thing is: you’re not the only one. Talking about climate anxiety is crucial to overcoming these emotions. Sharing your feelings with friends or joining a community can lighten the load on you and help foster a healthy and productive mindset. It helps to connect with others who get it—who share your worries and hopes. Plus, you can inspire each other to act, whether it’s reducing the waste you produce, advocating for policy changes locally, or simply educating yourself and others.

Let’s also not forget about self-care. It’s easy to get so caught up in scrolling through social media full of daunting statistics and damning data that sometimes we need to take a break. One way to do this is simply going outside and being in nature as nature has a way of reminding us of the beauty worth protecting and why we fight when all seems lost.

So, if climate anxiety is weighing you down, acknowledge it, but don’t let it take over your life. Find ways to remind yourself nature is something worth protecting and if we all band together we can turn this crisis into something positive. Together, we can turn anxiety into action and work towards a better future. After all, every small step counts because together we are stronger and can truly change the world for the better.
