Historic buildings and heritage sites around Stirlingshire will be exceptionally open to the public this weekend. It’s all part of the Scottish Civic Trust’s national “Doors Open Days” and visitors won’t pay a penny.
Bridge of Allan Well House, the building behind the town’s Hydropathic Spa, has recently been renovated and tours will be available alongside the display of mining related artefacts. The Hydropathic Spa was hugely successful and played a large role in the town’s development.
Down the road in Stirling, a walking tour of city centre tenement flats will take place. Meanwhile, there’ll be tours of Central library, visiting parts of the Scots Renaissance style building not usually available to the public.
There’ll also be guided tours at the Bannockburn House and Plean House and estate. Fundraising to restore Plean House and stables for community use is underway.
Back in the city centre, presentations will be run both evenings by Stirling Astronomical Society at the Highland Hotel. The 137 year old telescope will be inaccessible due to an issue with the building but the society will have telescopes in the car park, subject to weather.
Director of the Scottish Civic Trust, Doors Open Days national coordinator, Joe Traynor said that the weekend “encourages everyone to explore what’s often right in front of them”.
