The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) calls for more blood donors after a signifcant drop in donors. The SNBTS said “Only 2% of the population in Scotland regularly giving blood, we have a shortage of donors.”
The SNBTS has released a new appeal to the public, with communities in Stirling and surrounding areas asked to consider attending donor sessions to replenish stock.
Debbie Naughton, the Associate Director Donor & Transport Services of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, acknowledges “Autumn is traditionally a challenging time for the blood supply, with seasonal illnesses, the new academic term and darker evenings meaning fewer donors are coming forward. We are also currently seeing high demand for blood products from Scottish hospitals”.
Scottish hospitals in particular, are experiencing high demands for blood products with 4 out of 8 blood types below the desired levels.
Anyone who wishes to donate blood can drop into the Pathfoot Building on the University Of Stirling campus on November 6th 2026, where the NHS are offering morning and afternoon slots. Sessions do not need to be booked in advance and further details can be viewed on the Scotblood website.
There are multiple blood types in need of donations. One donation could save a life and can help to ensure hospitals have the blood they need for emergency situations.
