In a statement on Saturday, the Welsh Government announced the “sudden passing” of Clare Drakeford, the wife of First Minister Mark Drakeford.
The couple married in 1977 and had three children together.
Political leaders, including Rishi Sunak, Nicola Sturgeon and Keir Starmer took to Twitter to share their condolences with the First Minister.
The First Minister famously isolated himself in another building on his home property during the COVID pandemic so that he could shield his wife while working.
Speaking in February 2021, Mark Drakeford said: “It is a bit emotional. I’ve been married for a very long time and to not be in the house and to be at a physical distance… was a puzzling experience…”
The Welsh Government has asked that the family’s privacy is respected at this time.
