Edinburgh Tab accused of classism and anti-Scots sentiment, saying lack of Scots at uni is ‘as god intended’

The Edinburgh Tab is being accused of classism and anti-Scots sentiment by University of Edinburgh students after posting TikTok videos and comments seemingly making fun of Scottish students at the university.

The student-led tabloid were posting TikToks going around the university and asking students what they were wearing, and commenters pointed out that no Scottish people were featured in the videos.

The Edinburgh Tab responded to a commenter, saying the lack of Scottish students was ‘as god intended’.

The Edinburgh Tab then made a video on the situation, making fun of the angered Scottish students at Edinburgh Uni.

On this video, commenters expressed their frustration at the difficulty of attending Edinburgh Uni as a Scottish working-class student.

One commenter mentioned facing ridicule from English students: “it’s not that funny when you’re Scottish and went to a state school and you have English people making fun of your accent and calling you poor”.

Making further jokes, the Edinburgh Tab posted a TikTok where they approached a student but, upon finding out they are Scottish, walked away from them.

Scottish Edinburgh Uni students continued to engage with The Edinburgh Tab’s TikTok account, saying the situation wasn’t funny.

The Edinbrugh Tab responded to a commenter expressing this concern by doubling down on their comments, replying “bore off”.

They continued to joke by liking a comment calling their own news outlet a “Flop”, or a dud.

The Edinburgh Tab made their TikTok and Instagram accounts private after receiving backlash on the situation. They have now opened them up, but turned off commenting.

Several TikTok users have taken to the app to post videos discussing their own experiences with classism at Edinburgh Uni and the isolation they felt as Scottish students and as working-class students.

The situation also seemingly prompted the creation of the University of Edinburgh Scottish Social Mobility Society, founded on 4 October this year.

The Edinburgh Tab is a faction of the Tab group, founded by students at the University of Cambridge in 2009.

There are now 29 chapters of The Tab in different cities across the UK .

The Edinburgh Tab was approached for comment on the situation. They did not respond.
