The Wallace Monument serves as inspiration for the newest adaptation of the classic novel Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro. The Academy Award-winning director visited the site in 2023 while scouting filming locations in Scotland.

The 19th century, Gothic architecture and cliffside location inspired the creative team’s set production for the film.

Frankenstein was filmed across various locations in Scotland last year, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeenshire. Despite not being filmed in Stirling, production designer Tamara Deverell says that the city was key in creating the set for Frankenstein.

“The Wallace Monument was a very strong design influence for the look of our abandoned water tower, which transforms into Victor Frankenstein’s cliffside laboratory.

“We used the overall silhouette, the textures of the stone, the arched architecture, and, particularly, the turreted top in the design of our Frankenstein tower.”

Stirling has previously been the backdrop for multiple pieces of film and television, most notably Braveheart. Could del Toro’s recent visit signify the city’s future involvement in the industry as a filming location?

Frankenstein will be available to watch on Netflix from October 7.
