Stirling Golfer Selected for Arnold Palmer Cup

2 mins read

University of Stirling golfer, George Cannon, is the only men’s European golfer to be selected for this year’s International team at the Arnold Palmer Cup.

This is just another success to add to Cannon’s year so far. He placed second in this season’s prestigious R&A Student Tour Series Order of Merit and finished third at the 60th Lytham Trophy in Lancashire.

The Arnold Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup style tournament for university and college golfers. Reigning champions, Team International, will take on the United States at this year’s tournament at Tralee Golf Links in early July.

Cannon joins a list of Stirling golfers to compete in the tournament which includes Graeme Robertson, Hazel MacGarvie, Lorna McClymont; and Ross Laird, who left South Carolina last year after helping Team International lift the trophy.

The Arnold Palmer Cup teams are made up of 12 men and 12 women. This year’s Team International only has two golfers from Europe – George Cannon, and Caitlin Maurice from the University of St Andrews.

The Arnold Palmer Cup was founded in 1997, and many players have gone on to compete in the PGA, LPGA, and European Tours.

Dean Robertson, the University’s Head of Golf, said “George is ecstatic and this achievement is recognition of all the hard work and progression he has shown over recent years at Stirling.

“It’s great news for George and I’m absolutely thrilled for him. He has enjoyed a fantastic season, and this is a brilliant opportunity for him to showcase his talents on the global stage.

“We’re wishing him all the best as he joins golfers from around the world to take on the United States in this prestigious competition.”

The University has an exciting lineup of sport this summer, with students competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Dean Robertson is also continuing to captain the Great British and Irish team at the Walker Cup which is taking place in early September at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland.
