A Quick Guide to Stirling’s Sports Teams

With Freshers week and the Sports Bazaar well underway, here is some more information about our sports clubs and their training times.

Get Involved

The Stirling Clansmen’s season will kick off on 1st November with a game against the University of Edinburgh at Peffermill Playing Fields.

The Archery Club hosts training on Sundays from 9:30-12pm and on Mondays from 3-4pm, both in Sports Hall 1. All levels of experience are welcome at both sessions.

Stirling Athletics Club has training sessions designed for all ranges of experience. If you are a beginner and looking to try it out, they have Social Sprint sessions on Mondays and Fridays at 6pm, and joint Competitive and Social Endurance sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm. If you are more experienced and looking to compete, the club hosts Performance Sprints and Field sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6pm; as well as Performance Endurance sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 10am. They also have Strength and Conditioning sessions on Sundays at 2-4pm and Tuesdays at 5-6pm.

Badminton host social sessions on Mondays from 8-10pm and Tuesdays from 5:30-8pm. Their Development Squad sessions are on Thursdays from 9-11am and Sundays from 10-12pm. The club’s team sessions run on Wednesdays mornings at 8:30-10:30, Friday afternoons from 2-4, and Sunday evenings from 6-7:30.

Stirling Storm, the university’s baseball team, host their training at Airthrey Pitches. There are three sessions a week, Tuesdays from 1-3, Thursdays from 2-4, and Saturdays from 11-1.

On the Court and Field

Stirling Basketball have five teams with various training times. The Women’s Firsts train on Monday mornings from 7-9, and Thursday evenings from 8-10. The Women’s Seconds train on Tuesday afternoons from 3-4:30, and Friday mornings from 7-9. Their Men’s Firsts train on Tuesdays from 1-3, and Friday mornings from 7-9. The Men’s Seconds train on Tuesday evenings from 8-10, and Fridays from 2-4. The Men’s Thirds train from on Monday mornings from 8:30-10:30, and on Thursdays from 2-4. As well as their five competitive teams, they have a designated social session on Friday evenings from 7:30-10.

Cheerleading has six competitive teams, Cheer levels one and two, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pom, Cheer Dance, and a non-competitive Varsity team. The competition teams are chosen in October, so if you’re interested get along to their Give It a Go, before their training kicks off on 5th October. Our Cricket team trains on Mondays 1-3, and on Thursdays 1-4. Both sessions are in Sports Hall 1, and new members are welcome regardless of experience.

The Cycling Club is hosting three Give It A Go’s. Their road cycling GIAG is at 10am on 19th September. They have two mountain biking GIAGs, the advanced one at 2pm on 23rd September, and beginner on at 2pm on 24th September.

Stirling’s Dance club has a range of different teams, including but not limited to, ballet, tap, and jazz. They compete three or four times each year, and competition auditions are taking place on the 30th September, however you can still join the club without competing. The Equestrian Club hosts weekly recreational riding lessons at Tannoch Stables in Cumbernauld, as well as competitive training at Netherton Equestrian in Perth.

Fencing trains on Tuesday evenings from 8-10 and on Sunday evenings from 5-7:30. They welcome all levels of experience to Sports Hall 1 during these times.

Flag Football is going into its second year as a club, and they welcome all abilities to training on Saturdays from 1-3.

Football and Gaelic Games

Men’s Football boasts seven competitive teams. Their 1st, 2nd, and 4th teams compete on Wednesdays and Saturdays, whilst the 5th, 6th, and 7th teams only play on Wednesdays, and the 3rd team, otherwise known as their under-20s, play on Wednesday and Friday nights. They are also introducing a new Sunday League team this season, which is open to players of all abilities. The team’s trial process takes place in September, and due to the widespread talent across the club, it goes through several rounds before teams are selected.

Women’s Football has four competitive teams, one futsal team, and one social team. The 2s train on Monday evenings from 7:30-9 and Friday evenings from 6:30-8. The 2s train on Monday evenings from 5:30-7 and Fridays from 1-2:30. The 3s train on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:30-10. The 4s train on Tuesdays from 2-4 and Thursday evenings from 7:30-9. The Futsal team train on Friday evenings from 7-10.

Futsal have a 1s, 2s, and a social team. They have training sessions every day of the week apart from Saturdays. Trials for their competitive teams will take place in September.

Ladies Gaelic Football train on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7 at Pitch 3G, and on Thursdays from 2-4 at Airthrey Pitches. Players of all abilities are welcome to join at any point throughout the year.

Men’s Gaelic Football have three training sessions a week. Tuesday evenings from 8:30-10 and Thursdays 2-4 are both on Pitch 3G. Saturdays from 12-2 takes place at Airthrey Pitches.

From Golf to Rugby

Stirling’s Golf Club has five teams. They welcome players of all abilities, and train at the campus’ golf centre. The 2nd-5th teams play at Muckhart Golf Course, and the 1st team plays at Alyth Golf Club.

Handball trains three times a week, on Mondays from 11-1, Wednesdays from 8-10pm, and Fridays from 11-1.

Both Men’s and Women’s Hockey has three competitive teams, welcoming players of all abilities.

Men’s Lacrosse trains on Fridays from 19:30-21:30 at the sand pitch.

Women’s Lacrosse trains on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8 and Fridays from 3-5. Both mens and women’s accept players of all abilities.

Men’s Rugby welcomes players of all abilities to two pitch sessions, two strength and conditioning sessions, one match day, and one video analysis session per week. Their first game is the inaugural Capitals Cup against Heriot-Watt on 18th September.

Women’s Rugby’s first match of the season is also against Heriot-Watt as part of the Capitals Cup. They train on Mondays from 4-5:30 and Thursdays from 4-6, as well as strength and conditioning on a Tuesday night.

Something for Everyone

The Sailing club trains at Venachar on Wednesdays from 12-4, with weekly regattas on Sunday afternoons at the same time.

Shinty trains on Mondays from 12-2, Tuesdays from 2-4, and Thursday evenings from 9-10.

Squash runs training sessions on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30 and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30, as well as a social session on Friday evenings from 6-10.

Stirling Swimming’s Give It A Go is on 18th September 8-10pm, and they request that you attend the GIAG and wait for confirmation before buying a membership to join the team.

Tennis’ GIAGs are 8-10pm on 21st and 22nd September, and trials for the mens and women’s teams will begin on the 23rd September. They offer training for players of all abilities.

Trampolining and Tumbling train on Wednesdays from 10:30-1:30, and Sundays from 5-8. Gymnastics trains on Tuesdays from 5:30-8.

Weightlifting trains on Tuesdays from 3-4 and Saturdays from 2-4.
