Athletes from the University of Stirling won seven of the eight gold medals for Team GB at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. The team won eight gold, two silver and four bronze medals in total.
Members of the team set new British records and broke previous championship records as well.
Katie Shannahan won gold for the 200m backstroke and Angharad Evans won the 100m breastsroke. As well as silver for the 200m backstroke. Whilst Keanna MacInnes won the 200m butterfly and set a British record at 57.25 during the 100m butterfly.
The team also won medals for the women’s 4x100m medley relay, the men’s 4x200m freestyle, the mixed 4x200m freestyle medley and the women’s 4x200m freestyle.
Angharad Evans set the record for fastest female split breaststroke for a relay in history at 1:03.75. After setting the record Evans said: “It’s pretty surreal. I just wanted to break that 1:04.90 barrier.
“That was the fire in my belly that I needed – I wasn’t too focused on the medal, just my own race and breaking my own record, and I knew that if I got that right the medal would come to me – and that’s just what I focused on.”
Director of Performance Sport at the University David Bond said: “A huge congratulations goes to our swimmers on their incredible achievements in recent weeks, and to their coaching team – Ben Higson, Brad Hay, Josh Williamson and Charlie Boldison – as well as their wider support network here at the University and beyond. Well done to all.”
