The BBC has announced BBC Scotland will be removed from linear programming to focus on iPlayer content from spring 2027. BBC Three will face the same fate and Radio 4 Extra will be closed in its entirety.
This decision is made as part of the budget cuts aiming to reach £500 million by 2028. Static TV License fees and growing production costs make the BBC unprofitable.
Culture Secretary Màiri McAllan MSP confirmed the Scottish Government “opposes it in the strongest possible sense” in a statement. She described the decision as “wholly unacceptable”.
“This represents a significant blow to our media landscape and is the latest example of a longstanding pattern of BBC underinvestment in Scotland.”
McAllan also questions the ”broadcasters commitment to Scottish audiences and the creative sector” and “its public service obligations”.
The Royal Charter, the constitutional foundation of the BBC, states it should “reflect, represent and serve the diverse communities of all of the United Kingdom’s nations and regions and, in doing so, support the creative economy across the United Kingdom.”
BBC Scotland’s move to iPlayer results in the loss of 10 jobs in Scotland.
The BBC Annual Report showed 80% of Scottish adults used the BBC’s TV, online, news and radio services.
Fellow SNP member, MSP for Stirling, Alyn Smith, agrees with McAllan saying “today’s decisions imposed on BBC Scotland are just vandalism.
“Scots pay a license fee and we’re woefully undeserved by it as it stands”.
In contrast to McAllan’s statement, Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr has said “these are the right decisions.
“It needs to spend licence fee payers’ money wisely, focus on quality journalism and programming, and stay relevant in Scotland.”
Fan Reaction
Fans of the channel are lambasting the BBC’s decision to make the channel exclusive to iPlayer.
On Twitter, one fan says, “BBC Scotland has always been treated as an afterthought.”
Another echos saying, “Since River City ended at the end of August, I had an awful feeling that the BBC Scotland Channel would be THE first to go if they were getting rid of channels.”
Criticism of the way the channel has been run has emerged, “what a disgraceful abdication of duty to the public service in Scotland from the so-called national broadcaster.
“Even worse, it’s no surprise – at every turn, the channel was designed to be unpopular. Imagine there had actually been a vision?”
Announcements of further cuts across the BBC are expected. The Royal Charter renewal takes place at the end of 2027.
Mairi McAllan is in conversation with regulator Ofcom as well as the BBC Scotland Director, Hayley Valentine.
The BBC Scotland channel launched in February 2019 and has hosted shows such as Scot Squad and River City until its final episode this August. BBC Scotland continues until spring next year when the channel closes after eight years.
