University of Stirling student, Duncan Scott has won the swimming athlete of the year award at the 2018 British Swimming Awards banquet.
Scott, 21, has won a vast array of medals this year. Six at the Commonwealth games, including gold in the 100 free, silver I the 200 IM and bronzes in the 200 free and 200 fly. He added four medals to his tally at the European championships this summer, collecting a gold in the 200 free and silver in the 100 free. He also won relay gold medals in Glasgow in the 4×100 medley and 4×200 free relays.
Not only that but Scott’s 200 free time from Europeans was the fastest time from any of the other major competitions this summer and his 100 free from the Commonwealths was third.
Flag bearer for Scotland at the closing ceremony for the Commonwealth Games this year, Scott also re-signed with speedo in what has been an enjoyable season for the Stirling student.
Some swimming fans might have been shocked by Scott’s award since Adam Peaty broke the 100 breaststroke world record at the European Championships this summer. Ben Proud also swam the fastest time in textile in the 50 freestyle at the same competition. However, Scott’s collection of medals this year has given him the overall win.
Even Scott struggled to believe he had won the award.
