Travelling on a student budget

5 mins read

Travelling to new cities has a variety of benefits, including broadening the mind and learning new cultures, all whilst getting a much-deserved break from the stress of deadlines. However, it can be expensive, but you don’t need to look too far to find a budget-friendly getaway

Berlin

As well as having lots to see and do, Berlin is inexpensive for meals and drinks out, and for flights and accommodation too.

A lot of the tourist attractions in Berlin do not require payment to enter.

The Reichstag building is full of history, and you can learn so much about Germany there. It is free to book online, and you can get a free audio guide when you arrive.

From the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate is a two-minute walk, and, as you are unable to enter the monument, it is free for you to look at and take as many photos as you desire.

Right next to the Brandenburg Gate is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, this memorial is remarkable and is a must-see when visiting Berlin.

You can walk through the rows of the memorial which can be a very emotional experience as you take in the scale of this tribute.

With all the main tourist attractions being in walking distance, you save a lot on public transport costs, however the price for public transport is very reasonable and the ticket covers you across all modes of public transport in Berlin including the bus, the tram, the S-Bahn, and the U-Bahn.

Food and drink is a cheap cost in Berlin, whether you are planning to eat every meal out or planning to buy groceries to cook your own meals.

Kraków

Kraków is a city bursting at the seams with history and culture. This city is perfect for students due to how inexpensive food and drinks are.

Meals can range between 7€ to 18€ per person, or £6 to £17 depending on the restaurant, and prices of drinks equate to just a couple of pounds, making eating out a cheap task.

With fewer tourist attractions, you visit Poland to see the astonishing architecture that shines a light on its past.

The main historical site that entices tourists to Poland is Auschwitz Concentration Camp, which is an important place to visit to understand more about this country’s darkest hours.

Poznań

Another Polish city that has so much to discover.

Poznań is the perfect place to visit in the spring months as the parks are what make this city special.

There are a variety of parks that cater to everyone, whether you are looking for historical information on Poland’s Communist past, or somewhere to sit with a drink and relax in the early spring sunshine.

Everything is within walking distance, and just like Kraków, the food and drink is completely affordable.

The Old Town Market Square is the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by as you take in the incredible, colourful building surrounding you, or you could visit the markets on the weekend, where lots of authentic Polish goods are sold.

Anywhere you visit in Poland will never have a shortage of museums, which makes it a perfect place to get away from the pressures of studying but still learn something new.

Barcelona

If university has got you stressed and you just want to bask in the sunshine whilst still having some amazing tourist attractions to see, Barcelona is a must.

With cheap flights out of the UK and no shortage of cheap, yet comfortable, accommodation, it is the perfect place for a long weekend.

La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and Camp Nou, home of La Liga side, Barcelona, are all on your doorstep for a small cost, with lots of other hidden gems.
