Team Scotland Announces Stirling as Official University Partner Ahead of Glasgow 2026

2 mins read

The University of Stirling has formed a “strategic partnership” with Team Scotland just over a month away from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The greater relationship between the parties will open opportunities for students volunteering during this year’s games.

This comes as 16 of the 20 competing University of Stirling athletes will represent Scotland. 12 members of the high-performing swim programme will be representing Team Scotland alongside leading coaches Ben Higson and Bradley Hay.

Evan Jones, a Stirling student, will also join the swim team. Crystelle Lake and Cameron Lynn will take part in artistic gymnastics, while Shayne Humphries joins the 3×3 wheelchair basketball team. The ongoing selection process opens opportunities for further University of Stirling athletes to be involved.

The University of Stirling’s Executive Director of Sport, Cathy Gallagher, joined Jon Doig OBE, CEO for Team Scotland, and Sam Downie and George Smith, Stirling swim team members, to celebrate the news.

Gallagher said, “We believe extraordinary performances are built through collaboration.

“This new strategic partnership further strengthens our shared ambition to develop exceptional athletes, inspire future generations and reinforce Scotland’s reputation.”

Echoing Gallagher’s sentiments, Doig commented: “We are delighted to mark our years of working together with this official partnership ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.”

The university campus, which features world-class sporting facilities, has been “home base” to Team Scotland for years. A 50-metre pool sits beside a state-of-the-art golf studio in the sports centre, used by many students for its strength-and-conditioning suites. Surrounding the sports centre are the campus grounds, which provide an unrivalled backdrop for training. The campus also holds the Commonwealth Games Scotland Archive.

The Commonwealth Games kick off on Thursday, 23 July, 12 years after Team Scotland’s most successful tournament at Glasgow 2014.

This year 10 games and six para games will feature across 4 venues. The opening ceremony is taking place at the OVO Hydro with tickets still available.
