The second Edinburgh International University Film Festival takes place this week after a successful first year.

Screenings take place in the Scottish Storytelling Centre and French Institute of Scotland before a closing ceremony on 2 October. The final event celebrates the work of the festival and all award winners will be announced before a screening.

Each of the five categories will have one award. Complex Bodies, Strings of Community, Out of Competition, Waves of Loss, and Defining Home as well as an audience award.

Winners of last year’s awards can be found on the EIUFF website which will update following this week’s announcements.

About the EIUFF

The festival aims to promote the work of students through their films and provide a space for them to learn from industry professionals. Panels, workshops and screenings allow opportunities for students to connect with like-minded filmmakers.

As part of their Community Interest Company the EIUFF donates 25 per cent of profits to The Film Cult. EIUFF wants to “ensure that young filmmakers have access to the resources and support needed to bring their projects to life”. The Film Cult’s work provides access to resources and infrastructure used in filmmaking from cameras and props to editing suites as part of a non-profit initiative.

Throughout the year, EIUFF hosts The Rough Cuts Lab where students and recent graduates submit work-in-progress films for a monthly screening and feedback session. These screenings foster a collaborative and supportive environment aimed at helping the filmmakers gain the most from audience opinions.

Eligibility requirements and open submissions are available on the EIUFF website.

University of Edinburgh founded the EIUFF in 2023 before it publicly debuted in 2025 with their inaugural festival. It marks an active attempt in the Scottish film industry to open pathways for students and graduates. The festival attempts to break down rising cost barriers and provide a platform for emerging talented filmmakers.

Tickets for this year’s screening events are available on the Edinburgh International University Film Festival website.
