Warning: this obviously spoils the plot of the movie (if you’ve not already seen it by now…)
La La Land became iconic for the feel-good effect it has on its audience. The rom-com movie was released August 31, 2016, so many of us remember watching it in high school for the first time. Most people sob or honour this movie as one of the classic original rom-coms alongside The Notebook (2004), How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003), Pretty Women (1990) etc.
Starring Emma Stone (Cruella 2021) and Ryan Gosling (Barbie 2023) as the main characters and anguished love interests. I feel this movie was definitely deserving of the Oscar it received.
The city is presents itself as a visually aesthetic and magical world full of sunsets, theatres and jazz clubs adding to the films sense of whimsy.
Ryan’s Wonky Hand
Ryan Gosling is notoriously hard on himself for ignoring the dance choreographers and adding his own improv for a scene most people will recognise.
Gosling refers to this incident as his “La La hand,” and feels that he would re-film that scene if he could. He was unaware that directors would chose that shot for the films’ poster. Despite this, Gosling’s hand remains an iconic and notable quirk of the original movie poster.
Returning To Cinemas This September
Movies are just better at the cinema. Head over to your local (Stirling) VUE, ODEON or Cineworld cinema where they are re-releasing La La Land.
If you prefer to stay at home to save money, streaming services like Disney, Netflix and Amazon Prime are currently holding this movie to rent and/or stream for free.
