British Musicians band together to release silent album in protest of AI

1 min read

Is This What We Want? ask more than 1,000 musicians, including Kate Bush and Damon Albarn, who have released a silent album in protest against plans by the UK government to let artificial intellegence companies use copyright-protected work without permission.

The silent album, titled Is This What We Want?, features recordings of empty music studios and performance spaces to symbolise “the impact we expect the government’s proposals would have on musicians’ livelihoods”, reads the albums promo page.

The album is available on Spotify, with profits being donated to the charity Help Musicians, a charity supporting professional musicians, both working and retired.

The album contains 12 recordings, with the individual artist behind each of the “silent” tracks uncredited.

Musicians credited as co-writers include Sam Fender, the Clash, Hans Zimmer and Tori Amos. The project was organised by composer and technologist Ed Newton-Rex.

A government spokesperson said to Guardian, “As it stands, the UK’s current regime for copyright and AI is holding back the creative industries, media and AI sector from realising their full potential – and that cannot continue.

“That’s why we have been consulting on a new approach that protects the interests of both AI developers and rights holders and delivers a solution which allows both to thrive”.
