The prestigious Glasgow Film Theatre has announced, a stacked programme for its 50th anniversary celebrations in May.

A special screening will be held of Stanley Kubrick’s monumental 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) on ‘unrestored’ 70mm film. The special print was created by Christopher Nolan for the film’s 50th anniversary in 2018 to give modern film-goers the chance to experience it as audiences in 1968 would have.

Cult favourites

John Carpenter’s cult favourite Escape From New York will have a Late Night screening on Friday, May 3. Hitchcock will also feature in the celebrations with two special screenings of Rear Window on 4K to mark the film’s 70th anniversary.

Scorsese of the Month

Scorsese of the Month continues with a very special edition. Opening with, Scorsese on Scorsese – In Conversation with the editor Professor Ian Christie as he discusses his many interviews and on-set experiences with Martin Scorsese., it will be followed by a 35mm screening of one of Scorsese’s lesser-known and rarer films, Kundun.

Smash-hit The Room will return for a 20th-anniversary screening on Thurs, May 30, featuring a post-film Q&A and singing event with actor Greg Sestero, who plays Mark.

Other highlights

Other highlights include Wong Kar-Wai’s romantic In The Mood for Love in 4K, a Calamity Jane Sing-along and Blade Runner: The Final Cut

Paul Gallagher, GFT Programme Manager, said: “My hope is that this celebratory programme goes some way to capturing the essence of what makes watching a film at GFT so special, and we invite everyone to come and be a part of the anniversary celebrations and help us ensure GFT continues for many years to come.”

The 50th anniversary celebrations come after the 50th anniversary edition of Glasgow Film Festival in February.

Tickets for the anniversary programme go on sale at 12 pm on Wed April 3. More information about the line-up can be found here.
