The University of Stirling Students’ Union is facing backlash over wristband rules for the Students Union Awards at the Macrobert Arts Centre tonight, April 3.
Physical tickets were to be collected from the Union Office between 10:30am-3pm today, however, many students were displeased with physical tickets due to the event’s ‘sustainability’ theme.
Native, the ticketing website used by the union, already supplies QR codes for entry.
Speaking to students, one person said: “I don’t see the point in having bands.
“I understand it’s a public venue, but having bands when we already have a QR code, and only having one day to go pick up the band… it’s inconvenient.
“Lots of venues use stamps- that could have been easier, and they could have been provided on the door, on the night.
“Using unnecessary paper bands seems a bit wasteful.”
Another issue students highlighted was the wristband’s being put on people’s wrists at the office, sparking concerns over inclusivity.
Neurodivergent students and those with sensory issues spoke to Brig about the discomfort of wearing a band around their wrist all day, ahead of the ball.
One person said: “As an autistic student I find the use of these wrist bands a real stress.
“I hate the feeling of having them on my hand and tend to remove them as soon as I leave the venue.
“When I collected mine at 10.30 this morning and thought I’d have to have it on for the entire day including while showering, my heart sunk.”
A Union spokesperson responded: “We have operated with wristbands for our Union and Sports Union Awards for several years.
“In particular relation to this evening’s event, the Macrobert cinema remains open to the public so staff need a way to confirm guests are there for the Awards for catering purposes.
“Having been made aware that some guests may not wish to wear the wristbands, we have amended our process and guests will simply be issued with a wristband that they can choose to wear or show however they wish.
“We look forward to celebrating student success this evening.”
The Student’s Union Awards Ball 2025 is sold out and will begin at 7pm.
