The Oscars turned 95 last year and Brig is turning 55 this year. That means the Oscars have us beat by 41 years. That is 96 years of nominations and 96 Best Picture winners, but which films have been nominated for the most awards in that time?
5. Gone With The Wind (1939)
Victor Fleming had a great year at the 1940 Oscar ceremony with both of his 1939 films; Gone With The Wind and his adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wizard of OZ both up for multiple awards.
Gone With The Wind ended up winning eight awards, including Best Picture. While both are classics, many argue that Oz was more deserving of the Best Picture title with it being one of the most beloved family musicals of all time.

4. Forrest Gump (1994)
One of the most controversial Best Picture winners in recent decades, Forrest Gump managed to rack up six wins at the ceremony – including Best Picture, despite being up against Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption. Pulp Fiction remains a cultural landmark – with shows such as Community paying homage to it and devoted fans returning to it 30 years after its release.

3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Nowadays a blockbuster being nominated for 13 Oscars would be a very rare sight, but Lord of The Rings proved that there is room for such mass appeal films. While it didn’t take home many of the more prestigious awards, the film did win four out of thirteen, including best original score & visual effects.

2. La La Land (2016)
La La Land may have taken home less than half of what it was nominated for, but the film remains one of the most talked about and well-deserved Oscar contenders in recent memory, becoming a film school favourite and stone-cold musical classic.

1. Titanic (1997)/Return of The King (2003)
Titanic was a (sorry, not sorry) titanic when it came to awards, with 14 Oscar nominations and eight Globes. While winning just half of what it was nominated for at the Globes, the film managed to take home 11 Oscars – including Best Picture. And in 2003, Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King gained 11 nominations and won them all, making these two of the most prestigious films of all time at the Academy Awards.
