Superheaven “Long Gone” review: Nine years was worth the wait

2 mins read

After nine long years Pennsylvanian alt-rock band Superheaven are back with a new single titled Long Gone.

Recently Superheaven blew up on TikTok, their song Youngest Daughter from their first album Jar becoming very well known in the alt-rock community.

Fans of the band have been clamouring for new music from the band for years, but Superheaven have been radio silent since their 2015 release Ours Is Chrome.

Speaking to Stereogum, the band spoke about how their ‘ten years of Jar‘ tour confirmed to them that they still had fans and plenty of people would love to see them release new music. “It really made us realize that people really love this band and these songs we’d made.”

Long Gone is just as dark and grungy as Youngest Daughter and Leech, but theirs an evolved production due to the band being able to play with as many effect pedals as they wanted.

The song kicks off with a heavy drum beat that transitions into a melancholic bass line that permeates throughout the entire song. Lead vocalist Jake Clarke’s dark existential lyrics blow the song open, starting with him singing “We’re all alone. Drifting through the great unknown”.

Clarke’s voice has gotten deeper in the almost decade since their last release, leading to his vocals pairing perfectly with the lower mixed elements of the song. Every instrument is given time to shine due to the excellent mix done by the band. The sound is full but not overwhelming. Clarke closes the song with the line “Angels from a different hell”, following this the rest of the band play one last breakdown and the song winds down back into silence.

Though a dark song Long Gone is very accessible to those new to modern grunge and alt-rock, it’s undoubtedly Superheaven, but the new approach has allowed for easy repeat listens.

Long Gone is the first song off of two-song single titled Long Gone/Numb To What Is Real set to release this December. An album has not confirmed.

Long Gone can be streamed here.
