Free to play cross-over brawler Multiversus is set to wrap up following its fifth, and final, season.
Once heralded as the next “Smash Brothers killer”, Multiversus went through a difficult development cycle since its inception.
This isn’t the first time Multiversus has faced a shutdown as from the summer of 2023 to May last year the game was unplayable. WB Games and developer Player First Games talked about this shutdown being necessary for re-tooling the games progression systems and adjusting the net-code.
However, it’s clear this time round that the shutdown is permanent and will be in full force on May 30.
An Unfortunate End

Fortunately, Multiversus will still be playable offline through the local multiplayer, player vs A.I and training modes.Shifting the game to fully offline is an end even the studio wasn’t happy about, with game director Tony Huynh speaking out on social media platform X about the games shutdown.
Tony Huynh spoke about his mournful feeling towards Multiversus shutting down, saying that “Nobody wanted this outcome”, he further went on to say that everyone at the studio was “Grateful for the opportunity given to us by Warner Bros. Games.”
The end of Multiversus has been in the cards for a long time now, Huynh addressed this but stated that his focus was on making the game that best he could and aiding the team through the final months of development.
Another unfortunate result of Multiversus’ shutdown comes in the form of fan outrage and threats thrown towards Player First Games. These threats have been so vocal that Tony Huynh addressed it in his closing statement, saying that “I know that this is painful for everyone, and I know every member of PFG(Player First Games) feels it too, but I have to call this out, you’re entitled to what you say and think, but when there are threats to harm it’s crossing the line. I hope that you can take a step back and realise that this is an extremely sad time for the team. I am in deep mourning for the game.”
Multiversus‘ end has come shortly after Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League met its untimely end last month, both games were produced by WB Games. The future of WB Games is unknown at this time, but we can only hope that they have finally learned that Live Service games aren’t always a guaranteed success/
