Christmas is a busy time for everyone, sometimes you need a little break from the hectic season that only a good wee game can provide. Luckily, Until Dawn is here to save you from the holiday blues.
Originally released in 2015 Until Dawn is a choose-your-own-adventure style horror game, similar to TellTales’s The Walking Dead. Unlike The Walking Dead, Until Dawn has a realistic art style that elevates the horror and makes the story far more terrifying.
The story follows a group of twenty-somethings trying to survive a night of horror on Blackwood Mountain, hunted by unseen monsters and figures from their past.
It’s an engaging story that changes every time you play, depending on the choices you make.
There’s something in the snow

The snowy setting of Until Dawn makes it a joy to explore, but what really makes the game scary is what lurks in the snow.
Until Dawn’s big monster is The Wendigo, a mythological creature based on the spiritual traditions of the Algonquian-speaking tribes of America. The use of the monster has been criticised, but the one thing everyone can agree on is that it makes for a terrifying antagonist.
The Wendigo only appears a couple hours into the game after all the main playable characters have been established. Only after the monster makes its presence known does the fear of death start to come to the forefront of the game.
Due to the style of game Until Dawn is, players actions matter. One failed option could mean death for any of the main characters, and there is no restarting or respawning avaible.
Until Dawn is an oppressive game and the setting does a lot of the heavy lifting. The cold and snow is just as dangerous as the monsters, any journey into the snow makes the game far more terryfying.
Every choice matters

The choices of the player makes Until Dawn incredibly fun and rewarding to play over and over again. The amount of endings the game offers is staggering and if certain characters die early, whole levels can be missed on a first time play through.
Each ending is very different on the rest depending on who lives and who dies. It’s a scary task trying to keep everyone alive, but it’s a rewarding challenge for anyone looking a difficult task over the Christmas season.
If you’re a trophy hunter that wants to see everything the game has to offer, the remake offers twenty nine trophies that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
Until Dawn is the perfect game for Christmas, the snow and the monsters makes it a fun ride for anyone wanting some cheap scares over the holiday season
