How I fell into drinking pumpkin spice lattes

3 mins read

During my teen years I had a strong hatred for coffee in all its forms. Espressos? Tastes like a shot of dirt. Cappuccinos? Dirt with added milk. Mochas? Why would I have coffee that’s pretending to be hot chocolate? This is all to say I absolutely hated the taste of coffee. Yet, it seemed everyone around me couldn’t get enough of it. Whether it was my friends grabbing an espresso between classes or my mum drinking her fourteenth coffee of the day.

Everyone was exposed to the pumpkin spice latte trend through social media apps like Instagram and TikTok, for some reason I despised the idea of anything being pumpkin-spiced. I wish I could explain why but it was just one of these things my younger teenage self felt strangely strong about.

It wasn’t until about a month ago I kicked this strange hatred for it when I tried a pumpkin spice latte. The drink wasn’t made fancy or anything, was just one bought from Greggs. My choice to buy one came from feeling the hate I felt towards a drink was pointless. I mean come on, of all things to hate in the world, number one on my list was a drink.

Since drinking that first pumpkin spice latte, I haven’t been able to get enough of them. I understand how people can get hooked on coffee because I’m there in the trenches with them. Even as I write this I’ve drank two lattes, working on my third.

What I find interesting about my new addiction is how it’s been able to help me kick an old one – fizzy juice. I used to almost exclusively drink fizzy drinks. I knew it was terrible for me but I didn’t pay much mind to it. However, the more I drank coffee the less I felt the need to drink Coca-Cola.

I know it’s not actually a better alternative, but man, what I wouldn’t do for a hot drink during this cold weather. If you haven’t tried pumpkin spice lattes or any kind of coffee before, take it from someone who put it off for years for pointless reasons, and give it a try. Just try not to get addicted like I have.
