Twenty One Pilots “Overcompensate”: Welcome back to Trench

Twenty One Pilots make a surprising return with their latest single Overcompensate, off of their upcoming album Clancy .

The duo return to the sound of their fifth album Trench, seemingly doing away with the pop elements of their previous outing. This will be the groups seventh studio album, acting as a narrative and stylistic follow up to Trench.

When asked about their upcoming album on BBC Radio 1, lead singer Tyler Joseph said: “Clancy is our protagonist in the story we’ve been telling[…] There’s a bit of a confidence in it, a bit of a swagger.”

The song begins slowly, a piano plays softly, interrupted by harsh electronic wails before being fully cut off. A synth builds up before exploding with the line “welcome back to Trench” blasted over the rest of the instruments.

Tyler’s vocals fade in and out of the mix, the only constant being Josh Dunn’s excellent drumming. Both elements converge as the song once again changes.

The sound shifts to a slower pace as Tyler comes back to the forefront, mixing rap and singing as he has done previously on songs such as Levitate and Heavydirtysoul.

The song continues to rise and fall, Tyler flowing excellently between rapping and sing repeating the line “don’t hesitate to maybe overcompensate”, the song concluding with this same line.

The single sets up a story of reluctant leadership. It’s an exciting return to what is arguably Twenty One Pilots’ best album.

Overcompensate is out now and can be streamed on Spotify.

Clancy releases on May 17.
