Kings of Leon “Mustang”: A return to fun

Kings of Leon make a triumphant return with their new single ‘Mustang’, from their upcoming album Can We Please Have Fun.

Mustang sees the band return to a sound they abandoned 20 years ago. Bringing back pop hooks but keeping the rich sound scape they developed with their previous album, When You See Yourself.

This will be Kings of Leon’s eighth studio album, as well as their first under their new label, Capitol records.

With their announcement of the forthcoming album, the band reported that:

“It’s the sound of a band unified in vision and purpose, freed from any expectations”.

The song begins with lead singer Caleb Followill drawing you in with his smooth voice and repeating guitar strums.

Then, on the run up to the chorus, the bass takes centre stage, just as it did in their early albums. Working in tandem with Caleb, guiding the listener to the roaring chorus.

When the chorus hits, all elements of the song come together. With Caleb roaring “There’s a mustang in the city, and its calling me out”. The bass continues to dominate the sound with Caleb’s vocals. The lead guitar roars wildly in the back as the drum keeps a steady rhythm. It gives the chorus a sense of organised chaos.

The song builds to it’s conclusion ending on it’s most catchy line: “Are you a mustang or a kitty?”

Mustang is Kings of Leon telling their audience that they are, once again, ready to have some fun. All they ask in return is that you do too.
