Halo support studio Certain Affinity lays off 25 staff members

Certain Affinity, co-developers of Halo and Call of Duty is another studio hit by the surge of layoffs sweeping through the industry.

CEO Max Hoberman wrote about the layoffs on the company’s website stating, “Today we made the extremely difficult decision to inform 25 of our US-based employees that their jobs are being eliminated. This has the most impact on the teams running our business operations.” This is the first time in the studio’s seventeen-year history it has had to lay off staff.

This announcement follows many others that are similar across the games industry. Most recently, Sega’s Creative Assembly, and Supermassive Games, also suffered from layoffs.

Speaking further about why the layoffs have happened Max Hoberman had this to say, “There are multiple factors underlying this decision…Most significant is an industry-wide slow down in the funding of new lead and co-development projects and the reluctance of third-party investors to fund games or game companies”

Since the industry had a boom in 2020 due to the pandemic, funding was higher and more jobs were available, but after project budgets soared and development slowed down, funding was cut and jobs were lost.

Closing his statement, Max Hoberman said “Our current focus is on our team and the well-being of those most impacted…We have built an amazing culture where we all come together to support one another in times of need. We ask for your understanding and patience while we navigate this unprecedented event. Thank you”

He also discussed how those who have been laid off will receive compensation and benefits.

Certain Affinity is a two-hundred-and-fifty developer team, meaning that the layoffs have resulted in 10 per cent of their staff losing their jobs.

Layoffs will likely continue to affect the industry in the coming weeks and months. It’s only a matter of what studio is next?
