Fontaines D.C “Favourite” review: A nostalgic look at youth

2 mins read

The second single off of Fontaines D.C’s upcoming album Romance, Favourite sees the lads look back at each others childhoods in a beautifully wistful way.

When discussing the song Lead singer, Grian Chattan stated that it has a, “Never-ending sound to it, a continuous cycle from euphoria to sadness, two worlds spinning forever.”

Favourite will act as the final song for the August bound album.

The song released with an accompanying music video, a video composed of footage of the boys in their youth, mixed with footage of them kicking about Madrid.

Bassist Conor Degan talked about how, “This video is a reminiscing of the past; of each other’s childhoods we didn’t know[…]we explore where we came from, and who on some level, still are.”

There’s a real sense of love when the first guitar line hits. It immediately changes the darker tone of lead single Starburster, switching it up by giving the song a more pop orientated beat.

Grian’s lyrics fit well into the wider sound of the song. They have a moodiness to them, but the passion radiating from the line, “You’ve been my favourite for a long time” is beautiful.

Acoustic guitar takes center stage alongside Grian’s vocals. This provides a warmth to the song that has been missing from the band since their first release Dogrel.

The songs ends on a sustained note, adding to the longing the song explores.

Intimacy and longing have always been part of the bands DNA. However, it’s clear Romance may end up being their most wistful release yet.

Favourite can be streamed here.
