“Candyman” star Tony Todd dead at 69

Known for his roles in Candyman and the Final Destination series, acclaimed actor Tony Todd has died at age 69.

The actors wife Fatima confirmed his death occurred on Wednesday night at his home in Los Angeles. He was surrounded by friends and family at the time of his passing. No cause of death has been confirmed.

Todd was best known for his role as the hook handed ghost Candyman from the Candyman films. He played the role from 1992 to 2021 in four separate movies.

Actor Virginia Madsen who played Helen Lyle along side Todd in the original Candyman released a post detailing how much she will miss him. Speaking of him as a “truly poetic man”, and “a gentle soul with a deep knowledge of the arts”. She finished her memorial post by expressing her deep love for him and that he will be missed deeply by those that loved him.

Todd’s over four decade long career encompassed many roles. Most recently, he voice the character Venom in Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2. Insomniac also released a statement to social media following his passing that said “he brought so much joy to our studio”.

Before his passing Todd has spoken out about reprising his role as William Bloodworth in next years Final Destination, and that he had recorded more lines for Venom than were featured in Spider-Man 2.

The mourning of Todd has been felt across social today. Fans are expressing their deep sadness over his passing and wishing his family and friends well in this dark time.
