2024 has been a big year for music and the members of Brig’s committee have had a lot of mixed opinions about what was popular this year, and what deserved a bit more attention.
Just after Spotify’s annual “Wrapped” playlist dropped earlier this month, many Brig editors came forward with their opinions on this years mixed bag of music.
Though Chappell Roan and Charli XCX have topped the charts all year, with “BRAT summer” seemingly being a universally musical event this year, a couple of Brig members had mixed opinions on both of the artists.
Food Editor Kerry Lloyd, Head of Broadcasting Elliot Johnson and Chief Sub-Editor James Henderson all collectively voted Charli XCX as the most overrated artist of the year, with Kerry Lloyd specifically pointing out hit summer tune Apple as the most overrated song of the year.
Resident Chappell Roan loyalist News editor Kathryn Nutt expressed her love of the artist throughout many of the questions asked. When it comes to being her most streamed artist of the year, favourite album to come out this year and artist expected to become even larger next year, Kathryn put Chappell Roan forward for all.
Kathryn’s devotion to Chappell Roan is not shared by all Brig members, with Music editor Robbie McAvenue expressing his dislike of the artist. When asked “What was your least favourite song of the year?”, Robbie’s response was “one of them Chappell Roan songs”.
Primavera Sound 2024 was mentioned twice by Film Editor Alex Paterson and Music Editor Robbie McAvenue, both pointed out different artists as their favourites at the festival with Alex going with Charli XCX and Robbie going with AG Cook.
The final question of the survey asked the committee what genres or artists they believe will get gain traction in the next year.
Kerry Llyod believes that “both Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter are going to blow up even more than they have this year.”, other editors pointed out more specific genres, with Jame’s believing that Folk and country will blow up more as both genres have gone more mainstream.
This years wrapped was a mixed one with many of those participated in the survey having differing opinions from one another. The spread of genres and artists from regular writers for the music section only makes the section more broad.
