The Burgers ‘Kick Fights To Lose’ Album Review: Punk With a Punchy Twist ★★★☆☆

Glasgow based punk band The Burgers have delivered a raw throwback with the release of their latest album Kick Fights To Lose.

There’s a simple joy in The Burgers take on punk, it harkens back to the early days of the genre without completely imitaing. They are unapologetic, angry and looking to build a community around their music.

Kick Fights To Lose starts off strong, with album opener The Border Line, but begins to lose steam after the fourth song of the album Hypocrite Joe.

Each song on the album has a habit of blending in with one another due to the production choices the band made. The stripped-back sound that defines the album, and the band itself, comes to muddy the fourteen-song-long tracklist. 

Moving away from the negatives of Kick Fights To Lose, there’s a lot more to love about The Burgers’ simple take on punk, especially when it comes to the identity of the band. 

The bands identity is intrinsically linked to the man steering the ship, that being Zac Burger, a man that’s an open book filled with a mysterys.

Zac has talked at length about how his goal with his music is to build a loving community and avoid the pitfalls of the punk scene in Glasgow. He’s a passionate guy that doesn’t care if you like his music or not, there’s a lot to respect about that.

Kick Fights To Lose peaks with song Are You Really Listening To Music? around halfway through the album. It’s a perfect example of what makes The Burgers’ such an interesting band, it’s funny but it’s got an edge that’s sharp and witty. 


Though Kick Fights To Lose isn’t a perfect album, it’s a great exploration of the core punk fundamentals held up by simple chords and easy progressions.
