Alex G ‘Afterlife’ Single Review: A New Hope ★★★★★

2 mins read

Alex G is back after what seemed like forever with their latest single Afterlife, a positively hopeful tune that fits in well within their previously established sound.

Afterlife has been released as the leading single off of Alex G’s tenth studio album Headlights, which is set to release this July.

Similarly to songs off of their previous studio album God Save The Animals, Afterlife is steeped in nostalgia and the joys of youth, all backed by a gorgeous mandolin.

For all the joy the instrumentation brings, the lyrics tell a far more interesting story about living for life and just for the afterlife.

Alex G has been known for their melancholic stories told through jangly guitars and simple drum beats, but Afterlife escapes this slightly with a lot of emphasis placed on the hope that simply living brings.

It’s clear that since composing the music for director Jane Schoenbrun’s previous films We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow, Alex G’s sound has evolved into something more dynamic.

There’s a weightiness to the music that wasn’t present on early albums like Race and Trick, comparing their early work to their modern sound is night and day.

Alex G continues to get better and better with every release as they experiment more with dynamic instrumentation, and non-traditional sounds. There’s no doubt that Headlights will be another great album when it releases this summer.
