A still from Will Smith's 'Pretty Girls' music video

Will Smith ‘Pretty Girls’ Single Review: An Exploitative Attempt at Progress ★☆☆☆☆

2 mins read

Once legendary actor and rapper Will Smith is back making music. His latest single Pretty Girls is a reminder why he should have stopped doing both a long time ago.

Pretty Girls is Smith’s first official single in eight years and is the first song from his upcoming album Based on a True Story. Unlike Smith’s old music, Pretty Girls sounds like an attempt at making a thought provoking tune as opposed to his classic party hits.

This change falls flat on its face due to Smith’s potentially unintentionally creepy lyrics that detail how much he loved pretty girls, and how he wishes to buy them anything they want.

The red flags are there within the title alone but as Smith starts to rap it only gets worse. Not only do his words tell a story of exploitative gender dynamics, they also colour Smith as a much darker person than his once squeaky clean presence would lead you to believe.

Smith repeats the line “I love pretty girls” over and over during the chorus at nauseam. The slap dash production of the song doesn’t help its sound either as Smith is both too high and too low in the mix, which makes for a confusing listen to say the least.

After the slap that was heard around the world during the 2022 Oscars, Smith has struggled to retain public favour. However this hasn’t stopped him from attempting to claw his way back with Pretty Girls, a song that is bound to go down as one of the worst songs of the year.
