The Fantastic Four: First Steps Review: One Giant Leap For The MCU ★★★★★

3 mins read

Just when it seemed like Marvel was done delivering good films this year, The Fantastic Four: First Steps proved there’s plenty of great films yet to come.

Set on an alternative retro-futuristic Earth that’s heavily inspired by the 60s, The Fantastic Four: First Steps follows Marvel Comics’ original family as they face a threat none of them can handle alone.

It’s your bog-standard ‘alien from space threatens to destroy Earth’ story that the MCU’s been pumping out for almost two decades now; however, due to some incredible performances and gorgeous cinematography, the film is elevated leagues above any Marvel film that’s been produced in recent memory.

The best performances from the film all come from the incredible actors chosen to portray the MCU’s definitive take on The Fantastic Four. Leading man Pedro Pascal inhabits the role of Reed Richards admirably. Vanessa Kirby gives the best performance of the bunch as Sue Storm. Joseph Quinn’s more scientific depiction of Johnny Storm is refreshing to see, and Ebon Moss Bach-Rach’s The Thing will go down in history as one of the MCU’s best casting choices.

Each member of the family is given time to show off what makes them unique in the films just-under two-hour runtime, though for most of that time, the family stays together to work out a way to beat the oncoming threat that will no doubt change their lives forever.

There’s no prior viewing required to jump into The Fantastic Four: Four Steps, as the whole story was built to be stand-alone when compared to the rest of the MCU.

That’s not to say the team won’t be important moving forward, as it was already confirmed many months ago that The Fantastic Four will appear both in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday, as well as the following year’s Avengers: Secret Wars

If you’re a longtime fan of the comics, or a newcomer that’s interested because Pedro Pascal is in yet another blockbuster, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a perfect film to catch this summer at the cinema.
